LATAM Airlines Colombia Conducts the Country’s First Boarding Practice for People on the Autism Spectrum

  • Since 2022, LATAM has been part of the group of airlines internationally certified with Autism Double Checked (ADC) in serving individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

  • The airline has more than 15,000 trained employees and specialized protocols that ensure respectful, empathetic, and consistent care for Colombian families.

  • More than 60 people took part in the activity, which included practices such as a boarding simulation and was carried out in collaboration with the Colombian Autism League and El Dorado Airport.

Bogotá, February 17, 2026. LATAM Airlines Colombia carried out, for the first time in the country, a boarding practice for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), aimed at raising awareness about inclusion and accessibility for people with ASD in the airport environment.

Approximately 60 participants joined the initiative, including neurodiverse individuals with autism and their families. They were able to learn and practice the different steps required to travel, from entering the airport to boarding the aircraft. The boarding practice, conducted in partnership with the Colombian Autism League and El Dorado Airport, lasted around four hours and required weeks of planning and training by multiple teams.

Traveling with individuals on the autism spectrum requires knowledge, preparation, and experience. For this reason, the airline has been part of the internationally certified group of airlines in ASD care since 2022, building strong and continuously evolving expertise.

“Traveling with individuals with ASD requires preparation, sensitivity, and informed support. At LATAM, we have built this expertise over the years through certifications, clear protocols, and trained teams, to provide peace of mind and confidence to Colombian families at every stage of their journey,” said María Fernanda Flores, Strategic Planning Deputy Manager at LATAM Airlines Group.

As part of this ongoing effort, LATAM Group became the first airline group in South America to join the international Sunflower program, a global standard that facilitates the voluntary identification of individuals with hidden disabilities and conditions. The program is currently available at more than 150 airports where the group operates.

El Dorado Airport is also certified under the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, an international initiative that promotes a more human and inclusive travel experience for people with non-visible disabilities and conditions. The airport is now part of a network of more than 240 airports in 30 countries committed to accessibility, respect, and empathy.

At the airport, the “El Dorado A Tu Ritmo” program aims to improve the overall experience for passengers with cognitive disabilities by offering benefits such as reduced anxiety and stress during travel, enhanced comfort and safety, greater autonomy and independence in managing the journey, and the creation of an inclusive environment that respects each passenger’s needs.

The travel experience for children with ASD begins before the flight and continues throughout the entire journey. Through the continuous training of more than 15,000 employees and the implementation of specialized protocols, LATAM provides informed, respectful, and empathetic care designed to support Colombian families from trip planning to arrival at their destination. Initiatives such as practice boarding, which allows children to become familiar with air travel processes, are part of this comprehensive approach.

LATAM Airlines reaffirms its commitment to passenger care throughout the entire travel experience, advancing toward a more inclusive, human, and customer-centric aviation industry. Through international standards, continuous training, and coordinated work with key stakeholders in the airport ecosystem, the group continues to elevate service quality so that every journey is experienced with greater peace of mind, confidence, and well-being.
